Simon Harmer - The Best Cricketer of the Week

 

When it comes to weeks where there is County cricket, Simon Harmer is always expected to claim Cricketer of the Week. And so it has come to pass this week. Our all time highest point scorer registered another 300+ score this week (his eight ever) and claimed Cricketer of the Week (his third of the year and eighteenth ever). When it comes to the red ball competitions Harmer is king. However he is starting to become exposed in relation to his T20 game. Despite that magnificent T20 win last year for Essex, Harmer has now had two back to back failures. First the 2019 Mzansi Super League and now this year's T20 Blast. The extent of Harmer's lack of form can be compared to another player from our list. Colin Ackermann is built in the Harmer mound - and by comparing the two we can have some idea of how Harmer racks up. In terms of raw totals, Harmer is in charge. Since the start of the tournament Harmer had picked up 230 points compared to Ackermann's 158. But this is flawed as Ackermann has played far fewer games. Before last night's fixtures, Harmer had the lead on average points per game too. His 57.5 bettered Ackermann's 20 from two games. However last night, Harmer got a score of zero against Surrey whilst Ackermann got 118 against Yorkshire. This meant that Ackermann's average is now 52.67 compared to Harmer's 46. In terms of T20 cricket their is little difference between the two. Yet such is Harmer's red ball prowess that he has just moved into fourth position whilst Ackermann is in 16th . What may be concerning is that Essex have one final Bob Willis Trophy game and a limited number of Blast games. After that (as far as I can see) Harmer's year is over. He will need to get a characteristically huge score against Somerset in the final to cement his top ten place in this year's list.

The T20 leg of Australia's tour of England is over and the ODIs have begun. Thus far there have been two big beneficiaries representative of both of those formats. In T20 it was Aaron Finch that impressed the most out of the five featured players on our list. He outperformed in all relevant categories except for fielding where Smith prevailed. In the run column (the only one that really matters in T20) he was way ahead with 125. Ironically Warner was in second place despite the fact he only scored a run in the first T20 before getting a duck and not featuring in the final game. This has seen Finch move up three places on the overall list to eighth spot. With a change of format, comes a change of form for Finch. After yesterday's opening ODI, Finch has found himself out performed by two other players: Marnus Labuschagne and, most notably, Glenn Maxwell. Maxwell's T20 haul of 123 looks decent - but only 26.83% of those came from the bat. He certainly addressed that concern yesterday. His score of 77 plus three contributions in the field puts him in first place out of the five players who featured in that game. This performance has seen the Victorian move up two places into 13th. If he keeps this T20 form up for the rest of the series and into the IPL, he could be a challenging for a top five berth soon enough.


Once upon a time you could be safe in the knowledge that most players on our list would feature in a similar number of games. Corona has put a stop to this. This has seen a huge disparity in terms of active game weeks in 2020 - from 16 out of 35 to 0 in the case of Kyle Abbott. One of the chiefs beneficiaries of this is Lewis Gregory. The Somerset all-Rounder has had a poor year. His chances in the ODI squad looks to have come to an end after a series of poor performances. However he has just moved into the top five of the year - above much more illustrious company. The reason for this is the sheer number of games that Gregory has played. In 2020 Gregory has been active thirteen out of 35 weeks. This puts him in joint third with Joe Root - only Babar Azam with 14 and Tom Banton with 16 have more. When you divide his total score by those active weeks, it does not make pretty reading for Gregory. His average active weekly score of 118.31 puts him in a lowly 16th position. So Gregory has played a lot and played averagely across the year and moves into the top five. There are other players that this reflects even worse on. Banton is another player who has not built up on their 2019 promises. This is shown in his average. He is second bottom with 65.50. Peter Handscomb is one below him with the lowest average score of 47.88 from his eight weeks. The bottom three is rounded off by Virat Kohli with 87.67 across nine weeks. The top of the table is to be expected. Simon Harmer is number one with an average weekly score of 309.2 with Ben Stokes in second with 200.36 in his 11 active weeks. Colin Ackermann should be very pleased with his weekly active average of 182.20 which rounds off the top 3.

Simon Harmer - The Best Cricketer of the Week

We could wax lyrical for ten thousand words about the skills of Simon Harmer and it would still not do him justice. For a record stretching eighteenth week the South African claims the Cricketer of the Week honours - and does so playing considerably fewer games than most others on the list. With the return of T20 cricket and the fact that I held back this post until the end of the Test match, we have seen much more cricket played over the course of the last week. Simon Harmer is just one of three players to have played just one four day game in that time. The other two were Tom Banton and Lewis Gregory who scored 304 and 123 fewer points than he did. We will hear more from them later. Yet again Harmer delivered a 360 degree bowling and fielding performance with a full allocation of sixty points for economy and a bonus of  fifty points from catches in the field. Harmer has really put himself back in the mix in this truncated Summer. His 327 points sees him jump from 16th place to 8th - a nosebleed inducing ascent. This all does come with a slight caveat. Despite his individual success, weather has conspired against Essex this week meaning their game against Hampshire was a draw. This not only stopped Harmer from achieving even more but potentially sees them having to fight to reach the final of the Bob Willis Trophy. Harmer may just have one more four day match left this year! On top of this, Essex are now heading into the T20 Blast. The upside of this is a barrage of more frequent games but the downside is that Harmer does less well in the shorter format. This may seem anomalous when you consider that his previous high score before last week's 14 wicket haul came in that memorable T20 finals weekend - however this is very much the outlier. In the group stages both Essex and Harmer looked distinctly average and the South African carried this (lack of form) into the Msanzi Super League. If he looks over his shoulder he sees the likes of Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne and Aaron Finch just starting their Summers. Could we potentially see Harmer outside the top ten? It will make 2020 an even weirder year than it already is. 

Harmer is not the only player that has soared up the Overall List this week. Mohammad Nabi has moved up seven places thanks to four games for St Lucia whilst Jason Holder moves into third place overall for the same amount of game for Barbados. Whilst Hilder has grabbed the headlines slightly more with some big hitting innings, it is Nabi who leads him out in terms of points scored this week. The reason for this is largely consistency in bowling. Holder only got 30 points for economy across all four games. This pales in comparison to Nabi who got 60 across just three games. Such is Nabi's consistency that over the last three games he has got figures of 4.75 and then 4.25 twice. Another area where Nabi has contributed in the field where he has had a catch in each of his four matches. With the bat in hand, however, Holder is in control. Whilst he only has 11 more runs than his Afghan compatriot, his strike rates are through the roof - most notably in his 27 off 12 balls against Nabi's St Lucia. There are still plenty more games in this competition and it will be very interesting to see how these two all rounders measure up when the tournament is done and dusted. 

What of Tom Banton and Lewis Gregory who we mentioned earlier? They were the pair who, like Simon Harmer, only played a solitary Bob Willis Trophy match before being called up on ODI duty. The fates of the two cidermen have been pretty divergent in that time. Returning from injury to face Warwickshire, Gregory performed tidily. Match figures of 5-80 with a pretty economy has seen him move up to seventh place - his highest position since week 2 where everything is a bit fuzzy anyway. Seventh place, ahead of the likes of Steve Smith and Virat Kohli, is very flattering for Gregory. In a normal year it would seem very unlikely that he would hold such an exalted position - however if he played as he did last week he wouldn't be far off. On the other side of the coin, his teammate Banton had another torrid week with the bat. Last week he got 18 and 2 against Northamptonshire and got the lowest points of any active player on the list. This week he got 13 against Warwickshire and ended with the lowest points of any active player on the list. Since lockdown eased Banton has played nine innings in all formats of the game - he has scored over 50 in two of those innings and under 18 in the other seven. This is not good enough from England's wunderkind. Barton's lack of progress is rather splendidly symbolised in the list. He is the only player to have scored points since lockdown and moved backwards in the table - moving from 12th to 13th. Banton needs to redress his issues quicksharp.

Simon Harmer - The Best Cricketer of the Week

Next to death and taxes in the list of unavoidable things is huge hauls of wickets from Simon Harmer. And when I say huge I mean HUGE. In the second round of the Bob Willis Trophy, Harmer took 14 wickets. This is the third time he has done this in his four years as an Essex player. What is more he did it with an abductor strain that was meant to rule him out for three weeks. The man is a machine- and is also an ever present contender on our list. Except for the fact that he has not been present since his disappointing Mzansi Super League last November. The Surrey game shows he is more than ready to surge back into action though. And surge he has. His 453 points is the fifth highest weekly total since we refurbished the point scoring system at the start of 2019. It is also the second highest score of the year after Stokes' Second Test heroics against the West Indies. It has seen Harmer overtake, not only Colin Ackermann, but also Rohit Sharma, Glenn Maxwell and Mohammed Nabi on the Overall List. To put this into context, in two weeks he has scored more points than:

Rohit Sharma's 4 active weeks in Australia and New Zealand.
Glenn Maxwell's 6 active weeks for the back half of the BBL.
Mohammad Nabi's 7 active weeks for the BBL and the series against Ireland.

And that doesn't even sound surprising. Harmer is a legend in these lists and this Cricketer of the Week accolade takes him to 16. That is double the amount of second placed Rashid Khan. What odds that he will extend that even further by the time the English 'summer' is out?

We had an absolute thriller at Old Trafford and then have been let down by the weather at the Ageas Bowl. One of the things that the precipitation has robbed us of is another sight of Babar Azam at his best. In the first innings he looked good for his 47 runs....but has he been able to show off his potential as one of the big boys in world cricket? I'd argue not yet. As we stand, he has been the most influential of the three players to feature in the series. Due to Ben Stokes' withdrawal from the rest of the series, he comes to rest on 99 for the series. Whilst this is a disappointment, his score of 2204 for the year is 765 points clear of second place. Stokes is likely to be untouchable for the foreseeable. That leaves us with Joe Root as the only rival to the Lahore born player. With a Test left in the series, Azam has 26 more points than Root . The England captain's score of 9 was very much hampered by the weather this week and we know he has more in his tank. He still has the overall beating of Azam as he sits in second place - 227 clear of the Pakistani. Azam's score of 47 points this week was enough to see him move up another place and overtake Keshav Maharaj into fourth place. Next up for him is Martin Guptill. Just 31 points stands between the two batsmen. You'd imagine that Azam will easily slide in behind Stokes and Root before the end of the Test series.

As I calculate these score, it is normal to see two players vying for Cricketer of the Week - however of late the gulfs have been huge. Pre-lockdown it would be very rare to see a gap of more than 100 between first and second place. On average it has happened one in every ten weeks, with an average gap of 52.5 since we changed the scoring rules in 2019. Since the return to cricket we have seen it happen four times in seven weeks. There was a 152 points gap between Jason Holder and Babar Azam, a 117 point divide between Stokes and Holder the next week and a massive 334 point gap between Stokes and Azam. This week the gap between Harmer and Ackermann is a huge 369 - the highest we have seen since the points update. Of course, this is down the fact that there a fewer Cricketers competing in fewer places. All five of our active players were playing in England. England is wet. If there is one player who can avoid a downpour they will steak away. Usually, however, their will be a Southern Hemisphere Cricketer to challenge them and balance out their streak. But not of late. This is going to change soon as we are starting to have the promise of more cricket round the corner. The CPL begins today with more points on the cards for Holder and Mohammad Nabi. Our first full of Aussies have released their itinerary for a busy late (or early for them) Summer of cricket. New Zealand have announced that the West Indies, Pakistan, Australia and Bangladesh will all visit their little haven over their Summer. More competitions means more competition. And that's what we all want. It's hard to predict but we will be up to 8 players participating next week. And it will only improve from there.

Rashid Khan - The Best Cricketer of the Week

In order to succeed in our list you need to run like a train; regular, persistent and accurate. Last year Rashid Khan was working like a train that Mussolini would have been proud of. Five Cricketer of the Week awards were spread throughout the year as the Afghanistani sensation travelled the world dazzling his opponents. This year Rashid's gravy train has rather dried up. This week has seen a revival back to something like his best form however it is too little and too late to call this anything close to a success but it does lend us a glimpse of what used to be. This is most evident in his second to last game of the season where he excelled with bat and ball and achieved something that eluded him throughout 2019 - points for his economy. Throughout 2018, Rashid would more often than not couple regular wickets with strangling economy; this has not been the case this year however, raging against the dying of the light, he has shown us a glimpse of what used to be. His 271 points this week makes him one of two players to overtake Rohit Sharma to settle in 6th place for the season - overtaking Stokes in the very last game of the season. When he walked out at number 7 he needed 15 runs to haul Stokes in. He took just nine balls to reach that landmark - eventually out for an eighteen ball 40. As the Rashid express draws out of the station, it is not behind the realms of possibility we may see him in the 2021 list. There is light at the end of the tunnel.

The year has been won by Glenn Maxwell. And nobody would begrudge him the victory. The Australian has been leading our overall List since Week 9 and has done so representing Australia, Lancashire and Melbourne Renegades. For a player to have been so dominant throughout a year without having to resort to hit-and-hope T20 competitions is impressive indeed. His lead of 895 points ahead of Simon Harmer has been hovering over the 1000 point mark since the Summer, however once seemed in threat. When Maxwell announced that he was stepping away from cricket for an indeterminate period of time, his lead on the South African was 738. With the Mzansi Super League about to swing into action, many expected Simon Harmer to be destructive for his Johannesburg outfit much as he was last year. This failed to come to pass as both Harmer and his franchise looked stilted throughout the competition eventually leading to Harmer being dropped from the team that he used to captain. The closest he managed to get to our runaway leader was 597 points just prior to his deselection. When Maxwell returned to his own home T20 competition and The Big Show proved he was still worth the admission fee, it truly was game over. A well deserved winner and another strong contender in 2020 - after all, it is a T20 World Cup year.

Several of our Cricketers have leapt away from their previous position this week as if they were bachelors just before the stroke of midnight, leaping away from their less favoured partners and towards more appealing options before the stroke of midnight. Rashid was just one of six Cricketers to move up the overall list. Most significantly so was Ben Stokes, who yet again was the stand out performer in an under strength England side and managed to accrue 226 points across a warm up game and the first Test against South Africa. Not good enough to lead his team to another miraculous victory but enough to see him overtake Rohit Sharma to take 6th position in his first year on our list. He was not the only Englishman to manoeuvre an Indian out of position just before the final reckoning. Bairstow has had a poor year with only a strong IPL outing being something for the Yorkshireman to hang his hat on. There is a clamour for the Englishman to be given a spell away from the national side - something that was in the offing before the sickness bug debilitated the squad - and his nine runs has not changed many people's minds. It was, however, just enough for him to pip Shreyas Iyer, who himself had a disappointing week comprising of just 7 runs against West Indies. It is not all doom and gloom for our Indian contingent as two of their number also made an upward move this week. Shubman Gill's hundred for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy saw him leap three places and finish 16th in our 24 man list. Kuldeep Yadav's year has been a disappointment and this week is no different. The Indian spinner added just 10 points to his total from the final ODI against the West Indies however this was enough to see him overtake Abdur Razzak and finish 21st for the year. The other mover was Callum Ferguson whose strong second half to the season sees him finish 14th.

Virat Kohli - The Best Cricketer of the Week

Kohli is becoming a legend of Indian cricket. On his day nobody can beat the elfin Indian captain - however it is rapidly looking like that he will finish fourth in our list for the second year on the Trott. His 159 points accrued this week from innings of 19 and 70 against his favourite team - the West Indies - has pulled him 185 points away from fifth placed Joe Root. With two weeks left in the year it seems likely that Kohli will get at least fourth placed in the overall List for the year. Root has warm up matches and the first Test against South Africa whilst Kohli has further ODIs against West Indies - his favoured format against his favourite team. So with the chasing pack out of the picture we start to look upwards. Stalwart of our list, Jeetan Patel is a full 370 points ahead of Kohli and has just started his campaign for Wellington in the Super Smash with three wickets and a third place finish for the week. Whilst T20 is not Patel's favoured format, he will play enough games and has enough of a cushion to ensure that he can hold Kohli off. In fact, he is 345 points away from second placed Simon Harmer so it is not out of the question that Harmer, who will now be inactive for the last two weeks, may drop to third. One thing that is becoming increasingly clear is that Glenn Maxwell is very likely to be our star man for 2019.

This year's Cricket List has brought about an abundance of times when our top 5 for the week have featured a plethora of Indian talent. There have only been 20 weeks of the year where an Indian player has not made the weekly top 5 and this week is the sixth occasion where three Indian players feature - as Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill join Kohli. Rohit bagged another half century in the first T20 against the West Indies and in doing so became the latest player to leapfrog the disgraced Shakib Al Hasan. Sharma is now 8th with Rashid Khan 154 above him. Rashid is about to join up with Adelaide for some T20 action in the BBL so there could still be a bit of a tussle between the two of them to see who can jostle their way to finish just outside the top 5. Further down the list you will find Shubman Gill. A player whose top five aspirations died out many a moon ago. Shubman has been a frustrating prospect this year. When he plays he registers good scores - averaging 96 points across his 28 active weeks. However it is those 22 inactive weeks that really held him back. If he played as many weeks as this week's top Cricketer, Virat Kohli, he would have had 3456, enough to boost his position six places and be just outside the top ten. Instead he has to satisfy himself with overtaking Shai Hope into 18th position. He is undoubtably a decent Cricketer but his position in next year's list is in question thanks to his lack of cricket.

When it is clear that a player won't make the top ten summary on New Year's Eve and may not make the List for the next year, I feel that it is nice to offer something of a cricketing obituary for one of our soon to be departed brethren. Morne Morkel was a debutant to our list this year and is unlikely to feature next year after a disappointing year for Surrey, surprisingly salvaged by a burst of T20 form that helped his Tshwane side reach the final of the MSL. Barely mentioned in these posts for the bulk of the year, I have been forced to dedicate some time to him over the last few weeks due to his spurt up the table. At the start of the MSL, the veteran South African was in 17th; he finishes it in joint 14th and 322 points better off with a game still to play. Short of a legendary performance in the final, Morkel will finish the year as one of four players that did not win Cricketer of the Week in 2019 (alongside Jos Buttler, Jack Leach and Kane Williamson) and will have achieved a fairly nondescript year of cricket. His highest scoring week of 2019 came in Week 23 where he got 252 points through a seven wicket haul against Somerset. I think it very fitting that Surrey did not win that match and he did not feature in the write up for that week. If you do not feature in 2020, goodbye Morne - the invisible man of the 2019 campaign.
