The Cricket List 2026 Reveal

And with 2025 done and dusted....let's start revealing the names of the 2026 participants of The Cricket List starting with the retained players.

Retained

Saim Ayub - Had his year disrupted by that severe injury on January 1st last year. Managed to drag himself up to 13th but fully fit and firing on all cylinders he could be in for a big year in 2026.

Harry Brook - Back for his fourth consecutive year on The Cricket List despite having a less than impressive 2025. For the man who is the poster boy for the future of English cricket 2026 will be a big year.

Jos Buttler - The Cricketer of the Year from 2024 back for his 6th year overall. Is he able to finish in the Top 5 for the third year in the row?

Sam Curran - Our Cricketer of the Year for 2025 was a gimme to return in 2026. Can he be the first Cricketer to do it back to back since Simon Harmer?

Liam Dawson - A bit of a surprise package in 2025.....mainly because he played so much cricket that I wouldn't have been overly surprised if he was playing in my garden one given evening.

Travis Head - Not the best of year's for Head who finished 17th in 2025 - a far cry from his third place finish in 2024. Which version of him will be served up in 2026?

Ravindra Jadeja - Won't play as much as some of the others on our List but when he does he will score big. Can he finish in the Top 5 in successive years?

Pathum Nissanka - Got knocked out of the Top Ten on the very last day of the year but is a huge huge talent that may only get huger as he has managed to pick himself an IPL deal for 2026.

Nicholas Pooran - Finished just outside the Top 5 this year and plays in every T20 franchise going. Can he breach the Top 5 this year?

Phil Salt - Back for his third consecutive year in The Cricket List. Finished in the Top Ten both years but without ever really threatening anything bigger. Maybe this year?

Nat Sciver-Brunt - A good year domestically for NSB where she was instrumental in both the WIPL and WBBL....less impressive internationally but some development to come.

Returning

Quinton De Kock - Last seen in these parts in 2022 where he finished 8th. T20 gun for hire and now back in the Proteas green too so should be scoring big.

Shubman Gill - Finished 2024 in 16th place....you feel if he was selected this year he would have finished rather higher than that.

Simon Harmer - The All Time highest Cricketer of the Week winner returns. Not only is he a County Championship stalwart but now a genuine Test spinning threat.

Marco Jansen - Was on our List in 2023 but lacked consistency. Is he now a finished enough product to mount an assault on the Top 5?

Rachin Ravindra - Had quite a poor season in his inaugural season in 2024. Can he force his agenda a little more in 2026?

New Selections

Michael Bracewell - Always need a Kiwi in our List and this year's offering is well thought of Michael Bracewell. Question marks will arise around the amount of cricket he will fit in but he is undoubtably a quality player.

Sophie Ecclestone - Our fourth female Cricketer of all time and joining her international teammate on The List for 2026. Put aside some question marks over her fitness to one side and looks set to be a key feature in 2026.

Aiden Markram - Has long been on the longlist for these Lists but has never quite made it to the final 22...until this year. With his national team in the ascendancy it would be churlish to not include him.

Mehidy Hassan Miraz - Had a quietly very competent year this week. We have had two previous Bangladesh players; the hugely successful Shakib Al Hasan and the very unsuccessful Abdur Razzak. Which will MHM emulate?

Vaibhav Suryavanshi - Probably the most enigmatic pick of our 9 years doing this. There is A LOT of pressure on this 14 year old but it seems that he shrugs that off with aplomb. Will be fascinating to see where he ends up

Paul Walter - Simon Harmer's Essex team mate is coming in this year as a James Vince-alike. Unlikely to finish top like Vince did might push his county brethren hard.

Discarded

The most notable rejected player this year is Babar Azam who has featured in every version of these lists for the last 8 years and won it in 2020. Chamari Athapaththu is also let go after a very successful 2024. She was the first female player in our game. Annabel Sutherland is also let go - the highest ranked player to be unselected for 2026 after having finished 8th this year.

The other players who we are letting go this year include relative veteran Kane Williamson who is being kicked out for the third time. Two other players to have failed at their second time of asking are Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant who finished in the bottom 3 whilst Jaisal ends his two year spell. Other one hit wonders from this year are: Wanindu Hasaranga, Heinrich Klassen, Liam Livingstone, Jamie Smith, Suryakumar Yadav and Adam Zampa.

Sam Curran - The Best Cricketer of the Week....Again

Weekly Top 5

1. Sam Curran - 223 - Back to back Cricketers of the Week in two different formats of the game is pretty impressive stuff from the England discard. He has scored 550 points in the last fortnight.

2. Suryakumar Yadav - 147 - Didn't take Mumbai to the final but SKY was the biggest beneficiary of the IPL. His tournament haul of 1347 is more than 100 points more than anyone else scored in that time. In that period he has moved from 17th to 8th overall.

3. Jamie Smith - 134 - bit of a wonky week for Jamie Smith. 0 runs in the 2nd ODI and then all his points in the second. Enough for his highest weekly placing of the year and to see him move into 22nd Overall.

4. Liam Dawson - 129 - Just the solitary game for Dawson this week but he got a fourfer against Essex and sees himself with his third three figure score in the last 4 weeks. Loving the English Summer. Next up, England?

5. Yashasvi Jaiswal - 128 - A change of format for Jaiswal but still keeping his eye in. 88 runs across two innings against the England Lions sees him squeak into the Top 5 for the week.

Overall Top 5

1. Nat Sciver-Brunt - 1976 - Increases her lead in first place to 188 points courtesy of 104 points against West Indies Women. That gap is the second largest after the 293 between Travis Head in 16th and Harry Brook one below him.

2. Ravindra Jadeja - 1788 - Holds on to his second place berth by just 5 points. Could drop as low as 6th with his second inactive week next week.

3. Jos Buttler - 1766 - 101 points this week keeps him in 3rd place and fighting off a bit of a domestic cricket insurgency from below. Only 5 points off him and 4th place.

4. Sam Curran - 1761 - Over half a thousand points in a fortnight has seen Curran surge up the table from 11th to grace the Top 5 for the first time in 9 weeks.

5. Liam Dawson - 1751 - The Hampshire man makes his debut in the Top 5 just before he makes his prospective return to playing for England. Poetic.

Other Movers

Harry Brook's fine English Summer sees him continue to rise, up two to 17th. Meanwhile Kane Williamson and Liam Livingstone are both up a place t0 15th and 20th respectively.

Top 3 Averages

1. Sam Curran - 160.09 (Up from 153.8)
2. Nat Sciver-Brunt – 152 (Down from 156)
3. Chamari Athapaththu -143.6

Jamie Smith moves up by 8.67 this week, making his average 73.38 per active week whilst Bumrah's flacid end to the IPL sees him drop by 6.42 down to 71.33. They have the fifth and sixth worst averages of anyone on the List.

Pathum Nissanka - The Best Cricketer of the Week

Weekly Top 5

1. Pathum Nissanka - 259 - Has been in abysmal form all year but burst into life with 203 for Kandy against Dambulla this week. To put this into context his entire run tally before this match was 225.

2. Liam Dawson - 192 - A perfectly adequate start to the County Championship for Dawson after his spell away from cricket, 42 run, 3 wickets and 60 points from economy sees him take second place for the week.

3. Nicholas Pooran - 169 - Continues his great run of form in the IPL with another Top 5 score. Since the IPL started he has scored 528. The second highest in that time is Nissanka with 392 with Buttler in third with 372.

4. Suryakumar Yadav - 165 - Another decent week after an underwhelming campaign in 2025. 95 runs across two games for Mumbai sees SKY up to 16th place; his second week of moving up a place in the Overall List.

5. Yashasvi Jaiswal - 133 - Has been performing so badly this year that I have only just realised there has been a misspelling of his name in my master spreadsheet. 67 against Punjab moves him up two places to 19th on the Overall List.

Overall List

1. Nat Sciver-Brunt - 428 - Into her third inactive week in succession and still holds a 428 point lead on those squabbling below her.

2.Ravindra Jadeja- 1222 - Isn't really doing much for Chennai but has managed to chip his way up the Top 5 to move into a second place berth he held for 1 week 2 and a half months ago.

3. Annabel Sutherland - 1197- Inactive again and starts her descent down the List. There is only 255 points between her and tenth so she is likely to be in a bit of a freefall over coming weeks.

4. Nicholas Pooran - 1191 - Continues his assault on the List. After spending 6 weeks in 8th he has jumped up two places each week for the last fortnight. Not impossible he could do the same again in the form he is in.

5. Wanindu Hasaranga - 1148 - Not tearing up trees in the IPL but has done just enough to replace the outgoing Chamari Athapaththu and Kane Williamson in the Top 5.

Other Movers

Jamie Smith has not impressed yet for England or Surrey but his 67 points this week saw him overtake the returning Jasprit Bumrah to third from bottom.

Top 3 Averages

1. Nicholas Pooran = 170.14 (Down from 170.33)
2. Nat Sciver-Brunt - 165
3. Chamari Athapaththu - 150.29

For the second successive week, Rishabh Pant's average decreases the most. A fortnight ago he averaged 91.33 per active week - he now averages 57.6. Nissanka's average improves the most - up 26.04 to 76.75.
