Weekly Top 5

1. Joe Root - 277 - An ever present in our Lists, it is the first time he has scored back-to-back Cricketers of the Week. He joins Harmer x 3, Al Hasan, Finch, Lyon, Parnell, Razzak, Stokes, Azam and Maxwell in that elite club.

2. Marnus Labuschagne - 272 - Marnus isn't resting on his laurels in the BBL. He has finished second in the last two weeks and is now the second highest T20 point scorer on our list. Not bad going for two weeks work.

3. Glenn Maxwell - 126 - A last hurrah for Maxwell as he bagged a big score in the game where Melbourne Stars got knocked out of the BBL. International duty next for The Big Show.

4. Kane Williamson - 119 - Fans of Central Districts are not used to seeing their international captain turning out for them but a big score of 79 against Auckland this week sees him finish fourth.

5. Peter Siddle - 100 - Mr Consistent for Adelaide in the BBL. Over the last three active weeks he has score 90, 100 and 100. This weeks haul is enough to see him finish fifth in his final week of Limited Overs action.

1. Marnus Labuschagne - 916 - Being one of just two players to feature in Test and T20 cricket this year has paid off for Marnus. He has already opened up a healthy lead at the top.

2. Joe Root - 750 - Two Cricketer of the Week performances from Joe Root sees him go from 10th to 2nd. A good tour of India might see him challenge for top spot.

3. Glenn Maxwell - 570 - It was a disappointing end to the BBL for Maxwell. He is down a spot for the second week in a row.

4. Kane Williamson - 491 - A spell of Super Smash excellence sees him hold fourth spot. The slow pace of games in that competition may limit any huge leaps up the table.

5. Steve Smith - 413 - Inactive this week and down two places but is facing no immediate pressure from those below him who have all been eliminated from the BBL.

Despite a disappointing week individually and for his team, Quintin De Kock's 37 was enough to see him tip over Jasprit Bumrah's score and into the top 10.

Weekly Top 5

1. Joe Root - 369 - A daddy score from the new Daddy as his score of 238 in the first innings against Sri Lanka sees him finish top of the weekly table for the seventh time ever.

2. Marnus Labuschagne - 360- A week that started with the Queenslander being the stand out Aussie performer in a very memorable match against India and ended with two strong BBL performances. His second week in the top two of the list.

3. Steve Smith - 151 - Another workmanlike performance from the Aussie. His 151 points is some way off the top two players however. Third place will be some consolation on the week he found out Rajasthan have dropped him.

4. Peter Handscomb - 101 - Handscomb really has started this year strongly. He is regularly putting on decent scores at very good strike rates. It bodes well for the wicket-keeper who still harbours aspirations of a national recall.

5. Glenn Maxwell - 91 - Maxwell has had a bad week. Dropped by Punjab and three fairly underpar performances in the BBL...however the key word there is three. Weight of games sees him pick up enough to finish in the top 5.

1. Marnus Labuschagne - 644 - Multi-discipline excellence sees Marnus claim top spot for the first time. He is one of just two players to have featured in both long form and T20 cricket this year.

2. Glenn Maxwell - 444 - A poor week in the BBL sees Maxwell lose his top spot in what has been an overall disappointing week for the Melbourne captain.

3. Steve Smith - 413 - He would have been disappointed with the outcome of Aus v Ind but he has found his touch again after a poor back end of 2019. He moves up one spot since last week.

4. Kane Williamson - 372 - Back in action for Central Districts this week but 54 points could not hold off a surge of players behind him. He is down 2 from last week.

5. Joe Root - 463 - This week's Cricketer of the Week jumps a huge 5 places and into the top 5 thanks to that huge score against Sri Lanka.

Martin Guptill - The Best Cricketer of the Week

Martin Guptill is an unlikely star man for the first week of 2020. Picked in this list specifically because he has gone unselected in the major tournaments of the year - he has done just what you would expect of him in a third tier T20 competition and utterly dominated with the bat. He is now the captain of Auckland and played a captain's innings on New Year's Day with a score of 83* against Canterbury before following this up yesterday with 22 against Central Districts - both achieved with strike rates in the 100s. Guptill will not play as much in 2020 as he did in 2019 and he is nowhere near the talismanic player he was in his heyday - about 2015 - but at just over 33 he is nowhere near the scrap heap just yet. What can be guaranteed is that when he does play he will score big against unrecognised bowlers at an impressive strike rate. It is a formula that we have seen before. The fact that Guptill is at something of a loose end throughout the IPL and The Hundred may work to his advantage on our list. If one of your overseas players gets injured, Marty will be on the end of the phone. Until then he will be eyeing up T10 leagues and second and third tier T20 competitions such as the MSL, the Global T20 Canada completion and the much anticipated Euro T20 Slam. Are these halcyon days for Guptill? No. Might they be profitable days? Very possibly.

Another player who will play an awful lot of franchise cricket in 2020 is Mohammad Nabi. He debuts in our overall list in third position and will cover a lot of ground, use a lot of air miles and may very well rack up a fair few wickets and runs in 2020. Currently plying his trade for Rangpur in the BPL, the Afghanistan all rounder started his year with a wicket from each of his two games this week as well as modest scores of 5 and 23 with the bat. Nabi too has something Guptillian about him. This is exemplified by his last game of the week against Sylhet. The eastern Bangladesh franchise are bottom of the table with Nabi's Rangpur just a single place above them so Nabi will be disappointed with scoring just 23 runs off them - however he did so at a strike rate of 135.29, enough to score him the extra twenty points to see him overtake his team mate Lewis Gregory and take third place for the week. There is a slight long term issue for Nabi. Whilst Guptill is likely to feature for his national team in ODIs and T20s fairly soon - Afghanistan do not have any fixtures in the diary yet until the T20 World Cup until October! Although this is obviously not going to remain the case, there are no national games on the horizon for the number one ranked T20I and number two ODI all-rounder. He really will need to fill his boots in those franchise competitions.

You can't keep him away from the top of our Overall List. This is the first week since late February 2019 that Glenn Maxwell has not been in the box seat of our rankings - but he is not too far off the pace. His Nelson score this week sees him 54 points below Guptill and primed for another move up the table as the Big Bash rumbles on for another thousand games. His two performances for the Melbourne Stars this week underline what he brings to the table in these rankings. In the first game he was the effective bowler. The wickets of Alex Hales and Usman Khawaja are prime scalps for any established bowler...but The Big Show got 'em within his first two overs. He is proving a very effective surprise opening bowler - something we saw with Lancashire in the Royal London One Day Cup last year. Then came his second game - the Derby against the Melbourne Renegades. Here he was the batsmen extraordinaire with 40 off 32 balls to arrest a bit of a slide for his team and take them to a fifth win of the season and keep them at the top of the table. This form could see him start 2020 as he ended 2019. The dominant Cricketer in the world.

Simon Harmer - The Best Cricketer of the Week

What with no completed Test matches this week, there is a severe paucity of cricket to write about this week. In fact only five of our Cricketers played. Despite this, it does not detract from two outstanding performances in domestic cricket for two outstanding spinners. Between them Simon Harmer and Jeetan Patel got thirteen wickets. This week's cricketer of the week, Simon Harmer, bagged the lion's share with 8 for the Warriors against the Knights with Patel chipping in a fivefer in his first innings for Wellington against Central Districts. Both of these domestic stalwarts have coupled their wicket taking impetus with rock bottom economies, with Patel's figures of 19-12-13-0 being the most eye-catching. The spin twins are having fans of the County Championship salivating with the hope they will continue this fine form in the coming months. 

Another 330 points for Rashid Khan further extends his dominance in the overall table despite his team's poor form in the World Cup Qualifiers. He is also the first player to break the 2000 point barrier in the overall point league, with Simon Harmer 52 points away from that accolade. In what has been a very wicket heavy week for the top scorers in the weekly league, the Afghanistan spinner bagged 8 in two games - meaning that the top three for the week shared 21 wickets between them in their three different tournaments. Whilst he will be at a personal low, Rashid can cling on to a great stat. The spinner has by far the highest wicket tally for any player after 43 ODIS at 99 - with 12 more than second place Mitchell Starc.

Ending the big hitters section, we can now look at two Cricketers who played but maybe did not contribute as much as they'd have liked. Shakib Al Hassan played in the final of the Nidahas Trophy and, with a great sense of deja vu, did exactly the same as he did the previous week - scored 7 runs and got one wicket. This gave him his second consecutive score of 27. Despite the relatively small total posted, due to the lack of other cricket going on this week, he has still moved up the table two places to sit in sixteenth place. On top of this today is his birthday - a welcome present for the 31 year old. 

But one player who will be disappointed is JP Duminy - who joins the small list of players who have played a game but scored zero points. Going against Cricket South Africa, Duminy decided to join his Islamabad teammates in Pakistan and - despite the potential risk - did not bat nor bowl. Up until this point Duminy was the only player to have registered points in every game week - an impressive spell brought to an end.
