The Cricket List 2023 Final Standings

 Weekly Top 3

1. Pat Cummins – 369 – Ends a glittering year of cricket with his highest score of the year thanks to a ten-wicket haul in the Test against Pakistan. That extended spell of time out of cricket sees him finish just 15th this year.

2. Marco Jansen – 244 – His strong end to the year continues. After finishing top last week with domestic exploits, he gets the silver medal this time out.

3. Babar Azam – 62 – Something of a dropping off from silver place to bronze position this week but one score of 41 sees Babar finish the year with an appearance in the weekly Top 3.

The Final Top 10

10. Babar Azam – 3731

Cricketers of the Week – 4

Average position on list over the year – 20 weeks @ 9th

Has to be chalked down as a disappointing year for Babar. After having won Cricketer of the Year in 2020 to just squeak into the Top 10 is something of a fall from grace.

Key Stat – His 1755 One Day points mark the third highest of anyone on our List – however that is 749 fewer than the number one position.

9. Marco Jansen - 3831

Cricketers of the Week – 3

Average position on list over the year – 8 weeks @ 10th

Undoubtably an emerging talent of world cricket but, as it stands, too sporadic to mount a real assault on the top places this year. A December surge saw him breach the Top 10.

Key Stat – Finishes the year with the fourth most wickets, behind some very glittering names.

8. Devon Conway - 4051

Cricketers of the Week – 4

Average position on list over the year – 18 weeks @ 8th

Would come along with some very high profile massive scores….and then disappear for a month. Very much lacked the consistency to keep it up all year. This is backed up by his very middling average of 106.61 points a week.

Key Stat – The highest run scorer was miles away from Conway’s 2501 but he ended the year needing just 5 more runs to overtake Buttler and finish second.

7. Rashid Khan - 4068

Cricketers of the Week – 2

Average position on list over the year – 14 weeks @ 6th

Another one who failed to impress over the year. Was always flirting with the Top 5 whilst never really tying it down for any long term commitment. Injury did not help in the last part of the year.

Key Stat – Only 2 cricketers played more cricket than Rashid did this year – and that includes spending 6 weeks having back surgery after the World Cup.

6. Sam Curran - 4110

Cricketers of the Week – 2

Average position on list over the year – 11 weeks @ 8th

A tale of what could have been for Sam Curran. Did very well in the Summer, blew hot and cold in the West Indies…..but was quietly dropped from the World Cup XI. Still 6th is pretty good going nonetheless.

Key Stat – Finished joint bottom of the Economy points table from proper bowlers (aka discounting Harry Brook).

5. Simon Harmer - 4432

Cricketers of the Week – 6

Average position on list over the year – 9 weeks @ both 16th and 4th.

Not a vintage year for Harmer, 6 Cricketer of the Week was the most of anyone….but was also the lowest he has had (discounting Covid years). Effected massively by the fact he played so little cricket.

Key Stat – His average of 184.67 points per active week is the highest of anyone.

4. Ravindra Jadeja – 4487

Cricketers of the Week – 4

Average position on list over the year – 24 weeks @ 5th

Was picked on these lists for the first time in 2018 and did not do very well….has redressed that issue rather this year with a 4th placed finish. Only spent 14 weeks out of the Top 5 this year.

Key Stat – Simon Harmer usually dominates the bowling statistics….but not so this year. Jadeja finished with the most wickets and the highest economy points of any player.

3. Shubman Gill – 4814

Cricketers of the Week – 4

Average position on list over the year – 19 weeks @ 3rd

I am loathe to call this a breakout year for Gill….perhaps it is a breakaway year. Moved out of the shadow of Kohli to become a fully fledged superstar in his own right.

Key Stat – Dominated the batting this year. Finished with the most runs (3044), the most batting bonus points (600) and the third highest Strike Rate points (800)

2. Shakib Al Hasan - 4846

Cricketers of the Week – 5

Average position on list over the year – 29 weeks @ 1st.

In many ways he should have been our outright winner this year but his injury/political aspirations meant that after the World Cup he went AWOL.

Key Stat – Master of all trades but jack of none. Shakib Al Hasan finished in the Top 5 for Strike Rate points with the bat and (perhaps surprisingly) in the Top 5 highest economy points.

1. Jos Buttler - 5078

Cricketers of the Week – 4

Average position on list over the year – 26 weeks @ 2nd

Usually across the year things balance themselves out but this is the first time where I have felt that the overall winner is rather unjustified. Nobody has played more cricket than Buttler this week but his average points of 126.95 is not insignificant. Just feels a bit….flat.

Key Stat – Buttler excelled in two areas. He scored 290 more Strike rate pints than Suryakumar Yadav and 490 more fielding points than Jonny Bairstow.

Marco Jansen - The Best Cricketer of the Year

Usually by this point of the year we are all done and dusted but there is so much to play for with 9 days of cricket left in the year.

Weekly Top 5

1. Marco Jansen - 326 - Jansen producing a late year red ball score that we usually associate with Simon Harmer. Showed his true allrounder credentials courtesy of 5 wickets and 96 runs for Warriors in the CSA 4-Day Series Division 1

2. Jos Buttler - 267 - Has been a torrid last third of the year for England's white ball captain but he produced two 50+ scores and finishes in second place this week.

3. David Warner - 234 - Warner has featured in 5 of our last 6 years however his position in 2024 could be in doubt with his long form retirement. Could this have been his swansong?

4. Usman Khawaja - 171 - Backed up his political beliefs with an equally forthright performance with the bat to continue his dominance of the Weekly Top 5....when he plays. Only Pat Cummins has featured in fewer weeks of cricket than Ussie this year.

5. Pat Cummins - 129 - Over half of his points came from his economical ways with the ball in the first Test against Pakistan.

Overall Top 5

1. Jos Buttler - 5078 - We expected this to happen during the World Cup so it has been a loooooong time coming but, with a week left in the year, Jos Buttler returns to the top spot for the first time in 39 weeks.

2. Shakib Al Hasan - 4846 - Absent pursuing political office (something that doesn't earn you many points in this game). The Bangaldesh captain has been first for 55% of the year but drops down a place when it matters most.

3. Shubman Gill - 4786 - Inactive this week but has a Test Match to play so is scheduled to finish second (or maybe) first when the final tally is counted. Needs 292 points from that game to take the laurels.

4. Ravindra Jadeja - 4487 - Inactive this week - but is very likely to finish fourth. Has a Test match on the horizon but has 299 points to make up for third. Has been a very successful year for the spinner though.

5. Simon Harmer - 4432 - Destined to finish in fifth thanks to his disappearing act after the County Championship rounded off. Has a 322 point jump on 6th place.

Other Movers

Dropped in the World Cup and disappointing in the series against the West Indies, Curran still manages to leapfrog both Rashid Khan and Devon Conway into 6th place this week.

Ones to Watch

There are a cluster of Aussies towards the end of our List that could feature in any order by the end of the Boxing Day Test. Cam Green has a 10 point lead on Pat Cummins who himself has an 8 point advantage on Usman Khawaja.

Top 3 Averages

1. Simon Harmer - 184.67
2. Shakib Al Hasan - 156.32
3. Ravindra Jadeja - 144.74

In a week where all but one player improved their average - Marco Jansen's List topping score saw him improve by the most (6.9). That odd man out was Babar Azam - down 2.67 points to 122.3 a week.

Phil Salt - The Best Cricketer of the Week

The fifth highest week for point scoring with 9 triple figure scores. Last week's highest score would see you finishing 5th this week....
