Babar Azam - The Best Cricketer of the Week

Weekly Top 5

1. Babar Azam - 164 - The cancellation of the Test series against England had one upside for Babar. A chance to pick up huge points in the National T20 Cup as he did last year. He has started brightly here.

2. Jasprit Bumrah - 121 - Bumrah didn't light up the first leg of IPL 2021 but has brought his electric Test performances in to the shortest form. However 121 is the third lowest weekly top score we've ever had.

3. Virat Kohli - 118 - A poor performance and a good performance sees Kohli finish second in a low-scoring week.

4. Quinton De Kock - 112 - QDK is having something of a resurgence in third quarter of the year and keeps on getting these top 5 finishes.

5. Simon Harmer - 65 - Harmer's scoring dropped off towards the ned of the County Championship but this week has been so low scoring that a score of 65 is enough for fourth.

Overall Top 5

1. Simon Harmer - 4392 - Lower scores against Surrey and Northamptonshire means that Harmer's lead at the top is 559. With the Australian domestic season starting that does not feel enough.

2. Marnus Labuschagne - 3833 - This is Marnus eighth and last inactive week - now begins the graft to get back first place.

3. Joe Root - 3614 - The cancellation of the Pakistan tour means that Root's point scoring opportunities have been removed for a while. Is the 679 point between him and fourth spot bridgeable?

4. Babar Azam - 3083- Holds off a charge by QDK. With the two of them in T20 competitions for the next few weeks could be an intriguing dogfight.

5. Quinton De Kock - 2935 - Three months ago QDK was in the bottom 3. He now moves up to fourth place after spending 10 of the past 12 weeks in 5th. It is his highest position since the first week of January.

Ones to Watch

The resumption of the Australian Domestic Season will see two key players back on the scene. Peter Handscomb is just 25 points off of 10th place Ben Stokes - but has Virat Kohli 17 behind him. Who will claim that top ten spot?

There is a similar battle slightly further down as 13th placed Peter Siddle has a 15 point lead on resurgent Jasprit Bumrah. That litttle cluster just outside the Top Ten could be worth monitoring.

3. Ravichandran Ashwin - 176.36 (Down from 189.4)

Ashwin's switch from long to short form cricket sees him fall a huge 13.04 points per week - but still holds onto his third place spot overall. Virat Kohli improves his meagre average by 1.31 to 95.72.

Quinton De Kock - The Best Cricketer of the Week

Weekly Update

Only four players played this week so this is not so much a Top 3 as a list of players who are not Dawid Malan.

1. Quinton De Kock - 227 - QDK joins up with Mumbai Indians in some very good form. He has had three decent tournament's on the trot and will hope to hit the ground running for the resumption of the IPL.

2. Nicholas Pooran - 220 - Guyana did not reach the final but Pooran certainly saved his best sore for last with a strong 75* vs Jamaica.

3. Simon Harmer - 163 - A relatively sanguine score for Harmer this week with 'just' the 4 wickets against Surrey in a rain affected game.

Overall Update

1. Simon Harmer - 4327 - Holds on to top sot for the third week in a row and now has a 494 point lead on second BUT the English Summer is winding down. You feel that that lead is nowhere near big enough.

2. Marnus Labuschagne - 3833 - 2 months inactive and Marnus holds second still. He will have another week off next week but then is back in the saddle for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield the week after.

3. Joe Root - 3614 - The cancellation of the last Test is a disappointment for Root. If he had scored 50 over his average he would have taken second place. But he didn't. So he hasn't.

4. Babar Azam - 2919 - 10 people have held 4th spot across 2021. 7 have held it for a fortnight or less. Azam has held that position for 18 weeks now, 10 more than Pooran. You may feel this to be his natural resting place for the year.

5. Quinton De Kock - 2823 - QDK was usurped from his favoured fifth place spot by Moeen last week - but he has snatched it back thanks to a couple of cracking performances against Sri Lanka.

Ones to Watch

For the last 12 weeks there have been just 10 points between 16th placed Kane Williamson and 17th placed Steve Smith. Seeming as they were as inactive as Pompeii it didn't really matter, but as the IPL grinds back into life there could be a real tussle down the bottom there - especially with Bumrah also just one place above Kane.

There is also some interest at the top of the highest point scorers for short form cricket. Azam's 1897 points has been enough to see him in top spot for some while now however there are three IPL playing cricketers bunching up behind him. Nicholas Pooran (1777), Quinton De Kock (1712) and Moeen Ali (1709) will all fancy their chances of usurping the Pakistan captain with a good tournament.

1. Simon Harmer - 196.68 (Down from 198.29)
2. Marnus Labuschagne - 191.65
3. Ravichandran Ashwin - 189.4

Dawid Malan's average continues to drop. His poor performance for Yorkshire against Warwickshire shaves another 2.56 off his average. He is now only .39 off bottom placed Peter Handscomb with 87.39. Pooran's stonking end to the CPL seems him up 5.45 points to 105.5 a week.

Simon Harmer - The Best Cricketer of the Week

Weekly Top 5

1. Simon Harmer - 315 - So here we are again, with Harmer winning Cricketer of the Week for the seventh time in 2021. He was won it twice more than Labuschagne and Root who are his nearest competitors.

2. Moeen Ali - 165 - Started the Eng vs Ind series outside of the Test side but has used it as the icing on his cake to a good point-scoring English Summer.

3. Joe Root - 127 - This is the lowest score he has mustered of the 4 Tests by some distance but he ended with an average of 218.5 points per Test....not to be sniffed at.

4. Virat Kohli - 124 - Kohli saved his highest Test score until last in the Eng vs Ind series and manages to creep into the top 5.

5. Nicholas Pooran - 99 - His score this week is far less prolific than his List topping score of last week, however he continues to keep his name in the frame.

Overall Top 5

1. Simon Harmer - 4164 - Holds top spot for the second consecutive week and has opened up a 331 point lead on second and a 550 point lead on third.

2. Marnus Labuschagne - 3833 - His seventh inactive week has hit Marnus - but such was his lead that he still has a 219 point jump on third place.

3. Joe Root - 3614 - Has improved his score over the Eng vs Ind series to the tune of 874 but this is not reflected by any movement away from third spot.

4. Babar Azam - 2919 - Azam's fourth place spot seems as inevitable as the rising sun. He holds it for the 14th consecutive week.

5. Moeen Ali - 2678 - After 7 weeks with no change in the Top 5, Moeen has finished off a successful English Summer by usurping Quinton De Kock from 5th spot. It is the first time Moeen has entered the Top 5.

Jasprit Bumrah caps a good series off with another huge average bump. After starting the series as the lowest point scorer and with the poorest average he is now 5th with an average of 110.85 - better than 6 other players on The List. David Malan was the week's biggest loser as he dropped by 5.57 points per active week.

Phil Salt - The Best Cricketer of the Week
