Peter Siddle - The Best Cricketer of the Week

Again, we only had 4 players that featured this week so a Top 3 would be disingenuous instead we will do a round up of everyone that played.

The worst of the 4 was, yet again, the player who has scored the most points overall. Marnus Labuschagne had a better outing against Kent but could only boast 51 points by the end of Day 4. His average of 33.5 points a game is the lowest of any County Championship player.

In third spot was another Aussie who hasn't been setting the world alight but also got his highest score this week. 95 points against Surrey courtesy of a score of 70 sees Peter Handscomb finish third place this week.

Due to Essex beating Durham within 3 days, both Essex players have had their totals swollen rather. However Harmer's 198 points from 2 games looks rather miniscule. Would still have finished above Handscomb even without that second game.

Siddle's score of 428 looks huge but he had 2x 200+ points games and very much deserves his inaugural Cricketer of the Week accolade. This is the eight highest score over the last 3 years and beats Marnus' 404 in Jan of last year to be the highest score by an Aussie. Moves up from 13th to 6th on the overall List.

Overall Top 5

1. Marnus Labuschagne - 2115 - Despite poor performances in the County Championship, he has increased his lead in top spot. This will change if his form doesn't. Will score nil points next week so there is hope for the chasing pack.

2. Joe Root - 2039 - Inactive this week but is about to embark on a busy Summer of international cricket that will define his position on The List.

3. Simon Harmer - 1708 - A modest total from the games against Warwickshire and Durham but Harmer still claims third spot.

4. Babar Azam - 1594 - All being well Azam should be back in action on Wednesday to try and reclaim his Top 3 spot after a fortnight inactive

5. Ravichandran Ashwin - Holding on to fifth spot due to the incompetence of those behind him. Handscomb has failed to mount a challenge but Siddle is now breathing down his neck - just 52 points behind.

Simon Harmer - The Best Cricketer of the Week

Only the three players from our List featured this week so not so much a Top 3 as a.....three.

1. Simon Harmer - 370 - No surprises here. 12 wickets in a match tends to help you get top spot for the week. Shockingly isn't even in his top 3 highest scores he's registered.

2. Joe Root - 129 - Back to good form as he gets to within a Cat's whisker of a century against Glamorgan.

3. Marnus Labuschagne - 40 - I have good news and bad news for Marnus. He scored his highest points total of the season against Yorkshire.....but that total was just 40. Is averaging 27.67 a match - the lowest of any of our County Championship players.

Overall Top 5

1. Marnus Labuschagne - 2064 - Marnus' poor form in the County Championship has seen his lead on second place getting narrower and narrower. Just 25 in it now.

2. Joe Root - 2029 - Crosses the two thousand point mark with his nearest challenger only recently passing th 1500 mark. A good series against New Zealand will put him out of sight.

3. Babar Azam - 1594 - An inactive week but Babar holds 3rd spot for the fifth week.

4. Simon Harmer - 1510 - Five weeks ago he was in bottom place. His rise up the table has gone 18 to 17th to 16th to 9th to 8th and now to 4th place. The highest scoring cricketer from 2018 is averaging 215.71 points a week.

5. Ravichandran Ashwin - 1485 - After 5 weeks of 0 points, Ashwin is 147 points away from losing a top 5 place he has had since February.

Peter Handscomb - The Best Cricketer of the Week

Weekly Top 3 - again not enough cricket for a Top 5

1. Peter Handscomb - 98 - By some distance the least deserving Cricketer of the Week since we started this endeavour. Is only there because Middlesex lost a game in 3 days and has 2 games to his total. 98 points is the lowest winning total since Azam's 120 from March 20

2. Simon Harmer - 78 - A rare mortal week for Harmer against Notts. He still manages to move up one place on the overall List to 8th - overtaking Pooran. He might get one or two points next week.

3. Peter Siddle - 56 - The Robin to Harmer's Batman also had a quiet match v Notts...however in this low scoring week he manages to get into 3rd spot.

Overall Top 5

1. Marnus Labuschagne - 2024 - Holds down top spot despite dire form in the County Championship. He is averaging 21.5 points per game but still holds a 114 point lead on Root.

2. Joe Root - 1910 - You get the feeling that Root is zoning in on the first place spot that he lost 7 weeks ago. His average in the County Championship is 103 points a week so it is a possibility.

3. Babar Azam - 1594 - Could have used the ZIM v PAK to force his agenda but scored just 12 points across two Test matches. He now lags second place by 316 points.

4. Ravichandran Ashwin - 1485 - Another inactive week from Ashwin however he has only dropped one place over the last two months. Has an 147 point lead on fifth spot.

5. Peter Handscomb - 1338 - Weight of games sees Handscomb regain his fifth places spot after a fortnight out of the top 5.

A lot of downward movement this week. Harmer's is the most significant as his average drops 22.4 points. Despite completing 2 games in a week Handscomb's average only goes up by 0.19.

Simon Harmer - The Best Cricketer of the Week

Weekly Top 3 (Not enough cricket played for a top five)

1. Simon Harmer - 257 - Despite getting slightly fewer points week on week, Harmer still manages to find himself on top spot. He has scored 61% of the points of the five players we having playing in the County Championship.

2. Dawid Malan - 56 - In an IPL where the average points scored per game was 44.65, Malan debuted with an above average showing before the cancellation of the tournament. Poor luck.

3. Steve Smith - 54 - 'Ends' the tournament with his second total of 54 for a match. Ended up averaging 39 points a game - similar to his 35.38 at the same stage of last season.

Overall Top 5

Nobody featured in a game in our top 5 last week so the order is still:

3. Babar Azam - 1582
4. Ravichandran Ashwin - 1485
5. Glenn Maxwell - 1288
